Now that you have seen my ring, I hope you will go on and read my engagement story. I have the sweetest SNOOKUMS in the entire world, and our lives have changed SO MUCH over the past year.
(we were engaged in may, married in october of last year!!)
Please leave a comment! I would love to visit everyone who has visited me!!!)
Everyone has a story about their engagement. Usually that is the first thing people ask you once you tell them you are engaged, "How did it happen??" So- here is our story...
Our engagement was something that everyone else said they saw coming- but I somehow did not. Oops.
I knew that *Snookums* (names have been changed) and I would indeed someday be married. I knew that he was the one, and I knew that I was going to follow him across the country whether or not we were engaged. This was a decision I had come to, awhile back when he was away at bootcamp around 6 months before. So- in my mind, there was no rush to become engaged. I was going with him, no matter what.
Most of my girlfriends seemed to think it would happen before we moved- but I consistently argued against it. I gave the argument that we didn’t have the money, it didn’t need to happen, and it wasn’t going to because he hadn’t asked my parents.
Well- fast forward to the WEEK before we loaded up the truck and made our move- I was at my apartment on Tuesday packing up ALL MY CRAP
(I have a lot of stuff.)
I kept getting agitated with Snookums because he wasn’t there yet to help me, and because he kept putting off when he would arrive.
That same day I got the strangest phone call from my momma moo.
(At the time I just thought it was weird- and now it makes perfect sense!)
She calls out of nowhere and says, “Hey! What did you want to talk about?” I had no idea what she was referring to, and said I hadn’t called or texted her. She went on to argue that she had received a text message that read, “Hey Momma Moo can you talk for a minute?” I was so confused. She was confused. And then all of a sudden she says, “Oh well I gotta go! Bye!” and hangs up on me.
The back-story on this- was that Snookums had texted my mom, and even wrote “Momma Moo” which is what I call her in real life, so she thought it was me that had sent the text and just called me first! When she suddenly hung up on me, it was because Snookums was calling her. And apparently it had all clicked for her. So she hung up on me. Haha
So- after the random phone call, I’m weirded out and send her a text message letting her know that it was the strangest phone call I had probably ever received from her.
I tried to call Snookums because I wanted to know WHERE THE HECK HE WAS, and he didn’t answer!
(Because he was, of course, on the phone with Momma Moo!)
So no-one will call me back, no-one will tell me what is going on, and I still don’t put it together that it might just be because my boyfriend and parents are being sneaky because I’m about to be proposed to.
I’m not always the brightest tool in the shed.
After speaking to my mom, Snookums drives 2 ½ hours to see my parents to ask them if they will allow him to propose. My Momma Moo almost ruins it again by arguing with him about coming to the house to see them, “because the house was a mess!”
(He had told them he just wanted to speak to them and reassure them about moving their daughter across the country, and wanted to surprise them about asking to marry me once he arrived!)
My Momma Moo argued that they would see him on Friday (moving day) and there was no reason for him to drive all the way there. He finally talked her into it, and made his way there.
I, of course, was not there- but I hear that when he asked them he didn’t hardly get the question out before my mom hopped up, started screaming and said YES YES YES! Once calming down, she looked over to my dad and said, “Right?” and he replied, “Yeah. I think that would be a good move.”
My dad is a man of few words. Snookums
(like most guys)
has always been somewhat scared of my dad- and has given him the title of “silent assassin”.
This is a whole other story to be told later.
Anyway- the approval was given, the ring was shown, all were happy, and I had no idea.
Apparently, according to reports; the “silent assassin” even gave Snookums a hug!
WOW!
So- I go about my week, thinking what the heck is going on? I can’t get my boyfriend here to help me pack, my Momma Moo is going crazy, and NO ONE is talking to me! I thought it was so strange that I was moving across the country in 3 days and no one in my family was calling me, or texting me. Wasn’t anyone going to miss me?
(Apparently my brother had been threatened with death if he told me the secret, but still found it appropriate to text Snookums a single smiley face to let him know that he knew.)
Fast forward to Wednesday. Still no Snookums to be seen. Still so much CRAP to pack. I was not a happy camper.
That evening Snookums finally showed up- and informed me that we would be going to dinner on Thursday evening as one last hoorah before we loaded up the truck on Friday morning and headed out. I was not thrilled. I had made plans with a dear friend for dinner, and had to cancel! I was actually pissed at him!
(So funny now, thinking back.)
So he made dinner plans without telling me, and then he wouldn’t even tell me where we were going! I called and canceled with my friend, and felt awful doing so- but decided we should maybe do dessert or a drink after Snookums and I finished with dinner. I then went on to invite some of my other closest friends so we could all see each other one last time!
(Ironic now, as this sort of became our Engagement Party!)
Thursday rolls around, and we have a long day of finishing packing, getting ready for the move, and picking up the moving truck (which is another story. If you have never tried to drive a 17 foot truck with a full size car trailer attached, I wouldn’t suggest it!)
Funny story- when we went to pick up the truck I was reading him his horoscope. We were sitting in the parking lot and it said something about how he would feel much better after the end of the day once he got whatever it was he wanted to say off his chest. I looked right at him and said, "Is there something you need to get off your chest?" hahahaha
He just laughed, but how IRONIC.

I really didn’t feel like going anywhere, but I thought it was sweet he wanted to take me somewhere one last time before we left Kentucky, so I pulled it together and got ready. I had been talking about wanting to go to Hall’s on the River one last time before leaving for about a month, but figured that due to its location (Way out on the Kentucky river) we wouldn’t have time to go.
We left the apartment and I still had no idea where we were going, we kept driving past most of the places closer to downtown and the surrounding areas, and I finally figured out we were going to Hall’s!
I was so happy, and excited to eat some GOOD food.
(They have the absolute most delicious beer cheese in the entire world. I don’t even like beer cheese and I LOVE it. If you are from Kentucky, you will most likely agree!)
The whole way there I was snapping pics with my new Iphone, completely oblivious to what was coming. Looking back- Snookums wasn’t talking a whole lot, and seemed sort of nervous. But- like I said, sometimes I’m not the brightest.
(The drive out to Hall's)
Once arriving to Hall’s we went and sat out on the patio, I continued to snap pics and play with all the camera settings on my phone, and even ordered the most lady like thing on the menu- crab legs!!
(Had I known that in less than an hour I would be engaged and slipping that BEAUTIFUL ring on my finger, I wouldn’t have been cracking crab legs all over the place. Such class.)
(sitting on the deck)
I also remember at one point, noticing that he really wasn’t eating much, or saying much, and just acting nervous in general. I, of course, asked him if he was nervous about the move, and if that was why he was acting weird?
(HAHA)
After dinner, I got up to use the restroom, and came back to the table assuming we would then be on our merry way. Snookums said he would run out to the car and get the card he had made for me and would let me read it there.
(STILL NO IDEA)
He took his sweet time going out to the car, I later found out he was out there “putting on his game face”!
I hung out on the deck and waited patiently, and at this point I started to get nervous, but for a different reason. I always love his cards to death
(He makes them from start to finish, and they are always so cute and creative! You can always tell he has done his homework at the Hobby Lobby! We are perfect for each other. Such dorks!)
I was just scared that the card would be so sweet that I would CRY! And I absolutely HATE crying in front of people. I just don’t like it.
So at this point, when he comes back, I’m all anxious that I am going to cry, and he is all nervous because he knows what is about to happen!
He suggests we walk down to the back property behind the restaurant which is situated on the river bank. There is a little stone fence that runs all along the river on the Hall’s property. (I later found out that he wanted to go down there because he was absolutely SCARED TO DEATH he would drop the ring and it would fall down below the deck.
(Good call considering what actually happened…)
So we walk down to the fence, and take a seat, and he gives me the card and tells me to read it out loud, so he can see my reaction as I am reading it.
(Honestly. I STILL didn’t know at this point! I was just scared to death I was going to cry!)
I start to read the most precious card ever.
(He has made some doozies, let me tell you.)
In interest of not making anyone who might be reading throw up in their mouth from the sick sweetness of it all, I will paraphrase what it said…
It was a multi page card, and on each page he had listed something different that he loved me more than. I always asked him if he loved me more than Dr. Pepper
(which he is very fond of)
or Peanut M&M’s
(which he may be even more fond of)
to which he always replied, “Yes!”
I would also ask him if he loved me more than UK football. This one took a LOOOONG time before I got a yes.
(what can I say, he is a guy, and he’s obsessed.)
And the granddaddy of “Do-you-love-me-more-than-questions” was; “Do you love me more than UK basketball?”
(Now ladies, if your significant other is in any way associated with Kentucky, or UK, you KNOW this is a BIG DEAL to get a yes!)
Now for this question- I always got the answer of, “Someday.” HAHA
Anyway, back to the card- on one page it mentioned loving me more than UK Basketball. I was SHOCKED I tell you!
So I read the card, made it through without crying and thought it was super sweet. I remember thinking, “Aww, that was precious. Guess were gonna go load the stupid truck now.”
(I feverishly hate moving.)
But we didn’t leave.
(This is where things get really blurry for me.)
They say that when a proposal begins, your heart rate almost doubles, your vision can become blurry or become tunnel-like and that your hearing becomes almost non-existent!
I believe that is what happened to me. I remember him smiling. I remember feeling really REALLY excited, and nervous, and HAPPY all rolled into one. And I am absolutely positive he said all the right things..
I just don’t really remember all of them!
I know that he said he loved me, and was so glad I was moving with him, and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me.
To which I EMBARASSINGLY said,
“OH MY GOD.”
And then he asked, “Will you marry me?”
And then I saw the ring…
fall out of his pocket, and on to the stone wall by the river!!!!
We both flipped. I still hadn’t really seen the ring, just knew that it was in dire jeopardy of falling off the rock wall!
But- all heart-attacks aside, he saved the day, picked it up.. and the rest is history!
(It really wouldn’t have been an appropriate proposal for me if something wouldn’t of gone awry in some way. I’m always dropping something, or spilling something. So it seemed to fit perfectly!)
I’m pretty sure I said yes, considering I have it on now as I type this..
No, but really, I was so excited! And of course I said YES!
I just kept saying, “Is this for real???” OVER and OVER and OVER.
There really are not words to describe what a shock it was, and just how HAPPY I really was. I didn’t cry, but I was emotional. It was just perfect.
Now, when I think about it, I think- Of course we would go somewhere different and super “Kentucky” for the proposal. Of course he would wait until the very last minute to ask, right before we moved! Of course he would have the judgment to clear it with my parents before asking, and OF COURSE the ring would be absolutely STUNNING and be more than I could ever even imagine!
(had to show a picture. too beautiful not to show!)
It truly was a VERY happy moment in my life. And I have no one to thank for that but him!
After I calmed down a bit, and we let it sink in, we walked back to the car. As we walked back, he was filling me in on how he did it, how he went to see my parents, and how he knew almost a month before that he was going to ask me before we made the big move. It was amazing to find out that he had known all that time, and that my parents and his Mom had known.
Just crazy!
I could hardly contain my EXCITEMENT when we got to the car and I texted my loves to confirm a dessert date! I couldn’t wait to tell them in person!
My plan had been to let everyone get there and wait until someone noticed it. But you KNOW that didn’t happen. I couldn’t help it! These people are my nearest and dearest, and I was just so excited to tell them!
We of course called his mom and my momma moo and daddy moo (the silent assassin) on the way there. They both knew ahead of time, and confessed that was why they hadn’t been talking to me the last couple days for fear they might “spill the beans”.
(I also texted my brother and let him know it was safe to let on that he knew now, and didn’t have to fear for his life anymore)
Snookums and I were the first there to meet everyone, which was perfect! The first to arrive was whom I affectionately refer to as my “honey nibble”. (basically my sister.) I showed her, tears ensued, and happiness ensued!
We were joined shortly after by another fabulous friend of mine, miss britt
(who I actually had to cancel dinner with)
(Here is a pic of miss britt with a picture of Snookums, who she refers to as "pocket soilder")
and gave the big news, and then only moments later one of my favorite couples in the world, Acorn and Messer arrived and I got to tell them!
(Messer informed me that she absolutely, without a doubt, knew that I was getting engaged that night. She said she just “had a feeling!” Crazy!)
It really was perfect. I am so thankful that he hadn’t told a soul other than our parents, and that I got to share my news with the people that mean the MOST to me! And only hours after!
(Iphone picture, so it is a little blurry!)
We all shared desserts, I got all kinds of moving away goodies, I told our engagement story, and I got to spend time with some of the people I am going to miss the absolute most while I start this crazy cross-country and cross-continent journey with my Snookums.
(honey nibble, myself, miss britt, and messer)
Thurday. May 19th. 2011
It was a perfect evening.
Really, it couldn’t have been any better.
